Bishop Leonid of Mari (in the world Lavrenty Evtikhievich Antoshchenko) was born on August 6, 1872, on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, in the village of Malo-Nikolaevka, Bakhmutsk district, Yekaterinoslav province, into a family of peasants. After graduating from the city school, on May 30, 1896, he entered the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, and on May 26, 1898 he was appointed a novice of this monastery.
