When Mary was already pregnant, she and Joseph had to set off on a long journey, because the Roman Caesar Augustus ordered a census of the population throughout his land. Everyone had to go to the city of their ancestors. Joseph and Mary were from the house and family of King David. David's hometown was Bethlehem. King David ruled over Israel a thousand years before Jesus was born.
