The resistance of the Orthodox Romanians to the union lasted 60 years. Thousands of monks, priests, believers, women and children who, even at the cost of their lives, did not want to leave their Orthodox faith, were imprisoned from several weeks to several years. For confessing their faith, they were chained hand and foot, women and children were kept in prison for three or four months in winter, brutally tortured and scourged.
