The icon "Bringing to Pontius Pilate" has the source of the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. A rare feature of its iconography is the depiction of the procurator of Judea sitting in his judicial chair with the high priests Anna and Caiaphas, which is not consistent with Roman judicial practice. In addition, a servant sent by Pilate's wife to her husband with a message about the righteous Jesus, on the icon conveys this message to one of the high priests. The main event in the icon, as in other similar images, remains Pontius Pilate's washing of his hands in public, “in front of the people,” as a sign of removal from the unrighteous judgment of Jesus. The image of Pilate's wife is unusual - women were forbidden to enter the courtrooms in the Roman Empire.
