The Holy Martyr Ariadne was the slave of Tertilla, the elder of the city of Promissia (Phrygia) under the emperor Hadrian (117 - 161). Once, when the owner, on the occasion of the birth of his son, made a sacrifice to the pagan gods, the Christian Ariadne refused to participate in the impious celebration. For this she was beaten and, hanging, tore her body with sharp iron hooks
