The MonkMartyr Sergius was born on January 23, 1884 in the village of Chertanovo, Ostashevskaya volost, Volokolamsk district, Moscow province, into the family of the peasant Vasily Bukashkin, and was baptized John. When the boy was thirteen years old, his parents sent him to the Chudov Monastery in Moscow. He was accepted into the monastery as a novice and performed choir obedience. While living in the monastery, he graduated from the teacher's seminary, after which he received the right to teach at the elementary school.
