The MonkMartyr Macarius Kanevsky lived in the 17th century. It was the hardest time for the Orthodox people of Western Russia. The feat of life accomplished by the Monk Martyr was a feat of defending the Orthodox faith in conditions of an unequal exhausting struggle, when only the future of the Russian Orthodox Church could be defended, since what remained from the sweeping hurricane of union was demolished by the Tatar raids
