The holy martyrs, miracle workers and unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian - brothers, originally from Rome, doctors by profession, were martyred in Rome under the emperor Karin (283-284). Raised by Christian parents in the rules of piety, they led a strict, chaste life and were awarded from God the grace-filled gift of healing diseases. By their kind and disinterested attitude towards people, united with exceptional mercy, the brothers converted many to Christ. The saints used to say to the sick: "We do not heal diseases by our strength, but by the power of Christ, the True God. Believe in Him and you will be healthy." For the disinterested treatment of the ailing saints, the brothers were called "free doctors"
