Reuben is mentioned several times in the Old Testament. When his brothers, out of envy, decided to kill Joseph, whom Isaac loved more than the rest of his sons, Reuben stopped them, offering to throw Joseph into a ditch in the desert in order to later free him and return him to his father. The brothers listened to Reuben, but while the elder brother was away, they took Joseph out of the ditch and sold it to the merchants. Reuben, not finding Joseph in the pit, became desperate (Gen. 37: 21-30).
