In the world, John Naniescu, was born on July 15, 1818 in the village. Razalei, near Balti, Bessarabia, in the family of a priest. He was orphaned early and was placed in the care of his uncle, Hierodeacon Theophylact. On October 5, 2017, he was canonized by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church under the name of Joseph the Merciful.
